Population is more than just numbers and is a serious problem. In the twentieth century, there were less than two billion people that were living longer and more younger people. In less developed countries, 82 million people have been added and 1.5 million people added to well developed countries just in one year. The change in population is linked to economic development, education, environment, status of women, epidemics, health threats, access to family planning information, and services. In the 1960's, the population growth rate was up to two per cent annually which has declined since. From 1950-1998, the population grew from 1.7 billion to 4.7 billion people in less developed countries.
The current population is depleting earth's natural resources and is causing traffic congestion, poverty, environmental devestation and the list goes on. From 1995-2005, America grew 880 million people. There was six million people in California alone and the projected nation growth was from 35-55 million. Resources such as water and food are dwindling and the quality of life is diminishing. Arun Gandhi, grandson of Mahatma Gandhi, has once said, "In my county, four million people are born in the streets, live in the streets and die in the streets, never having used a toilet or shower." There are many homeless children where one million children are in inner cities.
Corporations and politicians do not try to do anything about the overpopulation issue. They keep pushing it aside like it is not a problem until it's too late. With 200 million more people in the world, there has been a 77% increase in traffic, 77% more planes, 77% increased pollution, and 77% faster use of limited sources. One to twelve point six acres are plowed for every new birth in America and according to the National Academy of Sciences, in the next ten years, 2500 plants and animals will become extinct in the U. S. of habitat destruction.
During the twentieth century, the demand for water increased sixfold or six times, which was twice the amount of what the population growth rate was at the time. Public Health is affected with unclean water and poor sanitation that kills twelve million people annually and air pollution kills three million more including heavy metal contaminants. The diminishing food supply is affecting the population. Sixty-four out of one-hundred five developing counries population grows faster than the food supply. It is predicted that in the year of 2025, eight billion people in 48 countries will have a fresh water shortage. Along the coastlines and oceans, the raising water level is caused by water pollution. Almost half of the original forests have been lost with sixteen million hectares being cut down annually. The forests are making $400 billion for the economy annually with healthy ecosystems. Biodiversity, biological diversity, is "crucial to the virtality of agriculture and medicine" for the life on earth. Then there is climate change which is caused from green house gas emissions, burning of fossil fuels, causing the sea level to rise, causing flooding, there is also drought and disrupt agriculture.
The consequences are great and frightening to think about. Overpopulation has caused global warming, ocean fisheries collapse, acid rain, ozone destruction, drought, contaminated water supplies, poisioning and sterilization of soils by insectisides and fertilizers, and others. Immigration is also a major factor. The Center for Immigration Studies is allowing immigration of 2.3 million immigrants into the U. S. annually. To help stop overpopulation of immigrants, there needs to be less than 175000 immigrants annually. If we the American people don't start taking the overpopulation seriously, the human race may be the next species to go extinct.
